So I’ve pulled out more music older than me. It happens.

It occurs to me that one of the things I hold against Islam is what became of Cat Stevens.  In this song, he writes about thinking, drinking, loving everything, and making his own rules (“the ones that I choose”).  Of course in his newer life, drinking is out, thinking is frowned upon, and since he voiced support for Khomeini’s fatwa on Rushdie, loving everything is out the window, too.  Oh, and making your own rules in Islam? Yeah, like that’s going to happen.

I catch flak for loving Tea for the Tillerman, but it really is one of the best albums of the 1970s.  It’s an album full of sadness, introspection, and whimsy.  Who doesn’t love whimsy?  Oh.  Right.  It’s a shame what became of Cat.
