Alabama No. 1 in AP poll for first time since 1992

The Crimson Tide became the fifth team this season to sit atop the AP Top 25, moving up a spot Sunday after previously top-ranked Texas was toppled by Texas Tech.

The Crimson Tide hasn’t been No. 1 since finishing that way after the 1992 season, when coach Gene Stallings, quarterback Jay Barker and a ferocious defense won the last of the Tide’s six AP national championships.

Unfortunately for my boss, Texas Tech jumped ahead of Penn State.  Not to worry, Penn State is number 2 in the USA Today poll and has the easiest remaining schedule of any team in the top five.  Really Penn State has no excuses if they do not run the table.

Bama has LSU in Death Valley this weekend and Auburn still looming.  Even though Auburn is down this year, the Iron Bowl IS their season now… and that makes them just as dangerous as ever.  If Bama can stay unbeaten through the regular season, they will still have to face number 4 Florida in the SEC Championship game.

But for today, at least, Bama fans are in high cotton.

  1. and isn’t it strange how Bama and TT are now 1 and 2 after having played each other in the Cotton Bowl just two years ago?

  2. That is still the ugliest, most beautiful, game-winning field goal, EVER.

  3. I remember the “It went in???” lip-read

  4. I remember that the only people cheering at first were the Bama fans in the other end zone. Everybody else was holding their breath… even Ralph.
